Ballard wins back-to-back rookie honor

Make it two in a row for Boyd Ballard.

Ballard - who tended goal for the Weyburn Red Wings last season and is now a freshman netminder with Providence College in Rhode Island - earned his second consecutive Hockey East 'Rookie of the Week' award on Monday.

The Weyburn product made 62 stops and recorded two wins for the Friars as they defeated Army 5-4 on Friday and UMass-Lowell 5-3 on Sunday. In the latter win, Ballard made a career-high 38 saves and improved his record to 4-0, posting a 2.72 GAA, a .915 save percentage and one shutout.

As well, he was on fire against the River Hawks power-play, giving up only two goals on 12 chances.

Last year, Ballard was an SJHL All-Star with a 23-3-4 record, a .908 save percentage and a 2.90 GAA, helping the Wings win both the league championship and the Anavet Cup.
