Weyburn Golf Club in good financial shape despite costs

Weyburn Golf Club members heard at their annual meeting last night the club ended the 1997 season in better financial shape than in '96, despite some unexpected or increased costs.

The golf club also elected a new executive with a number of new faces on board, including Rod Nieviadomy as president, replacing Dennis Lizuck who held the position for the last two years.

The vice-president is Norm DeLaet, ladies club president is Gloria Scaddan, and the board members are Mark Stockham, Ron Berezowski, Gord Worona, Louis Woodard, Ed Sellsted and Dave Creurer.

In his report on the audited financial statement, accountant Doug Court said the golf club had a net income of $30,698 on the year, up from the income of $18,603 the year before. Expenses also increased, with one of the biggest jumps being for property taxes, going from $3830 before reassessment to $15,876 this year.

Cost of maintenance of the grounds went up by $10,000 over the year before, as did the depreciation of equipment. One unexpected increase was due to the heavy spring runoff, requiring the golf club to upgrade its dike system at a cost of $4000.

For improvements to the grounds, the course spent around $8200, including the planting of 365 trees and building of a new tee box. A new golf cart shed was constructed at a cost of $28,000, with one old golf cart shed demolished and removed to allow the parking space to be extended.

The golf club also took a lease on 15 new golf carts this year, and revenues on the carts nearly doubled last year's intake, going from $19,344 to $35,284 this year.

Club captain Gord Worona reported that entry numbers were down in some of the tournaments this year, including the Crocus Classic, but the tourneys were able to return an income of $10,000 to the golf club.

He said changes in 1998 will include looking at a match-play format for the championships, similar to what the seniors club did this year, and possibly revising the team skins format as well.

Marie Grohn, outgoing ladies president, said the booth at the Farm, Home and Leisure Show was well worth the effort, generating $8300 for the golf club before the season even got started.

As she was involved in the junior program as well, she reported they are in a transition right now as well, with 40 new members coming out this year.
