City churches prepare programs

Christmas services, pageants celebrate the birth of Christ

With the Christmas season upon us, the Weyburn churches are celebrating the birth of Christ with special programs carrying the message of the birth of a Savior.

The Silver Heights Bible Church is holding a pageant titled "Away from the Manger" at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14. The Sunday school children will act out a story of the first Christmas and how people walked away from Christ and Christmas. The play will send a message of the importance of Jesus and ask the audience whether they plan to accept the Savior or walk away from Christ.

The children of the Weyburn Free Methodist Church will perform in a Christmas variety show on Sunday, Dec. 14 beginning at 7 p.m., with all the different Sunday school classes contributing activities such as singing carols and readings.

The following Sunday, Dec. 21, during regular service at 11 a.m. the adults will try to outdo the children's performance with a drama and musical performance called "Angels, Shepherds and Kings, Oh My." An Old-Fashioned Christmas will be held on Christmas Eve. "This is a casual time to come together with family and spend some special time together," said Kevin Bishop, associate pastor.

All-Saints Anglican Church will hold special services in preparation for Christmas Day, beginning with a memorial Christmas service on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 4:30 p.m. Participants will focus on the Christmas theme of hope as they remember loved ones who have died. Christmas Eve is packed with activity beginning at 7:30 p.m. A family Eucharist will be held with a blessing of the nativity scene, followed by the Christmas Story acted out by the children. Christmas carols will be sung at 10:30 p.m. and a candlelight Eucharist is scheduled to begin at 10:45 p.m.

The Sunday School Christmas Pageant at the Zion Lutheran Church will be held during the regular service at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, with a dress rehearsal on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. The performance and dress rehearsal of "The Gift" is open to everyone.

The Christmas Program at the Weyburn Gospel Assembly will also take place on Sunday, Dec. 14. A Christmas dinner will be served at 5 p.m. followed by a play, "Christmas Comes to Lonestar Gulch," performed by the South Hill Boys and Girls Youth Club at 7 p.m.

A Christmas piano and organ concert at Calvary Baptist Church will provide a bit of an alternative to the usual Christmas pageants. The concert performed by Helen Davidson and Cleone Jeffery will fill the church with Christmas music beginning at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, with everyone welcome to attend. A candlelight service will be held on Christmas Eve.
