Ballard wins rookie honor for third time

Boyd Ballard has done it again.

For the third time this season, the freshman goalie for the Providence College Friars has earned the Hockey East 'Rookie of the Week' award for his outstanding work in the crease. Last week, the Weyburn product was named the league's Goaltender of the Month for November after posting a 5-1-1 record and a 2.83 GAA.

Ballard picked up the honours as the league's top rookie this week by stopping 65 of 69 shots in Providence's two Hockey East wins against the Maine Black Bears on Dec. 5-6; he received the second game star in Thursday's 6-2 win and was the first star in Friday's 7-2 victory. A potent Maine power play entered the series at 38 per cent in man-advantage situations but was stymied by the former Weyburn Red Wing All-Star, who allowed only one goal in 13 Black Bear power plays during the two games.

After a total of 10 appearances this season for the Friars, Ballard's record is now 8-1-1 with a 2.77 GAA, a .914 save percentage and one shutout.
