RCMP in chase, city police make arrests on theft, mischief

The Weyburn Police Service and RCMP had a busy weekend, including involvement with a high-speed chase on Sunday night and a number of arrests made on theft and mischief charges in the city.

A member of the Weyburn RCMP was involved in a high-speed chase which originated with the Estevan Police Service and RCMP. The vehicle was first chased from Estevan into the Roche Percee area and back into the city, and then west to Macoun.

The chase ended with damages to the Weyburn member's RCMP cruiser after a minor collision in the Macoun area, and some injuries to the officer. Speeds up to 130 kilometres an hour were reached in the city and 140 km-h in the country during the chase, which lasted just over an hour.

A 17-year-old youth is in custody of the Estevan city police and appeared in court on Monday morning charged with dangerous driving and obstruction of justice.

Three arrests were made by Weyburn city police, including the arrest of a 17-year-old male for theft of a Ford Aero Star van from a residence on Fifth St. on Thursday.

The youth has been charged with theft, for damaging a vehicle compound and damaging a fence just outside the city limits. He will appear in provincial court at a later date. This incident is still under investigation by the city police.

An 18-year-old male was arrested on Thursday and charged with mischief in relation to a broken front window downtown at Superior Office Products. He will appear in court to answer the charge on July 20.

A 51-year-old MacNutt man was arrested and charged with mischief and carrying a concealed weapon on Thursday, and he will appear in provincial court on July 6.

Over the weekend, the Weyburn RCMP made several patrols of the Nickle Lake Regional Park in relation to the Cancer Jam event held there, and charged two persons with impaired driving, charged two drivers who had their licenses suspended, handed out 12 liquor tickets and one park bylaw ticket, with the accused in the latter matter banned from the park for one year.
