A dance to bridge communities

The entire student body and staff of Stoughton School and Ocean Man School do a traditional round dance within a ring of tipis on the grounds of Stoughton School on Thursday. The dance was led by singers from Ocean Man around a drum in the centre of the circle, and ended the first of a two-day cross-cultural workshop held at the school. The workshop, hosted by Ocean Man Band and the Yorkton Tribal Council, was held to promote greater understanding between the communities of Stoughton and Ocean Man, and to help each community understand the cultural background of the other.

Placing the pattern

Warren Blackstock, industrial arts teacher at Gladmar Regional School, helps Grade 12 Mexican exchange student, Luisa Medina, place a pattern on her sheet of wood. Luisa was taking part in industrial arts class on Thursday, working on the birdhouse she chose as a shop project. Luisa comes from Monterey, Mexico, a city of approximately four million residents and is spending the year with Steven and Janice Blackmore of Minton. Luisa has graduated from high school in her country but came to Canada to improve her English before heading home to attend university with a major of Graphic Arts in mind.

Crumbling highways

Members of the Montana State Highway Commission stop their vehicles along Highway No. 6 south of Ceylon to examine the broken pavement near a warning flag on the highway. Members of the Montana State Highway Commission Dan Larson, Pat Ablin, Ed Smith, Tricia Saindon, Thorm Forseth and Marv Dya drove to Ceylon from Plentywood, Mont. (along with seven other members) to meet with Saskatchewan Minister of Highways and Transportation Judy Bradley. The group made the trip on Thursday to persuade the Saskatchewan government to construct a new Highway No. 6 in order to create a main north-south route for both product and people to move cross-country.
