New customized oil field truck first built in Weyburn

Laurence Woodard, of PenWood Oilwell Servicing Inc., has hailed the first attempt by a local company to refurbish an oilfield truck into a self-contained mobile pump and tank truck as a great success.

Southern Industrial and Truck, Ltd., owned and operated by John Rouse, began building the mobile pump and tank truck for PenWood at the beginning of July this year, and completed it last week.

"It's been a lot of fun for everyone," Rouse said.

The frame of the flatbed truck was stretched to seven feet and the wheelbase is 333 inches.

A pump has been permanently mounted on the back of the truck, and is operated by the truck's engine. During a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Woodard explained the truck has an Allison automatic transmission, allowing the driver to shift and run the pump from the truck's cab.

Woodard said he was pleased with Southern Industrial's work. PenWood already owns several such trucks that were built in Edmonton, but was anxious to have one built closer to home.

He credited his son, Darren, with the design of the pump.

Knouse called the project a bold step on behalf of PenWood. He said it took "a lot of guts" on PenWood's part to go ahead with the project.

Materials used to construct the truck were all locally obtained, and even sublet projects were awarded to local companies.

"Everything that was done has been done in Weyburn," Knouse said.

Knouse said his company will be open to such projects in the future.
