Plans for 1999 Music Festival underway; executive selected

The 1999 Music Festival will be held in a slightly different format which will keep the festival going for two full weeks in Weyburn.

The music festival will take place from Monday, March 8 to Friday, March 12 and from Monday, March 15 to Friday, March 19. The date for Stars of the Festival is yet to be determined. The extended festival will allow for the anticipated higher number of entries into the festival and to allow for incidentals and more breaks for adjudicators and participants alike.

Colleen Weimer will return as president, with Marilyn Schuck as secretary and Shelley Kievits as treasurer. Bonnie Goranson, Carol Sproule and Linda Moffat are in charge of hospitality, Diane Bestvater and Colleen Sproat are in charge of preparing the program and Delaine Barber, Esther Bangsund and Rhonda Renz will make decisions about the scholarships. The entry secretary for piano is Marga Cugnet and June Fletcher is the entry secretary for band and vocal. Piano convenors are Cindy Bell and Nona Stewart while vocal convenor is Marnell Cornish. Michelle Craigen and Lindsay Schmidt will take care of publicity for the festival. Bob King will take over the responsibilities as the new executive member in charge of halls and property. Shelly Mahaffey and Rhonda Schwindt are new in sharing the duties of band convenors.

A new addenda will be added to the directory this year which states that scholarships will only be available to Weyburn and district participants in the festival. Local contributors would like to see their donations awarded to outstanding students from Weyburn and district.

Entry fees will remain at $7 for solos and duets and $12 for ensembles or groups of three or more. The deadline for entries is January 25, 1999.

Participants who entered the Weyburn music festival in 1998 do not need to purchase a new syllabus as the book is good to the year 2000. New participants may purchase a syllabus at Music Craft in mid-November.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the T.C. Douglas Centre.
