Grade 12 student Patti Rust is part of a well-oiled machine.
After playing volleyball at the junior high level for three years and on the WCS junior volleyball team for two, Rust is now playing offside with the Sr. Girls Eagles team coached by Blake Johnson.
"It's more competitive and there's more commitment," Rust says of the higher calibre of the game at that level. "And you have to be in good physical condition."
One of the things she likes about volleyball is the cohesiveness that forms between team members. "It's a smaller team than any other sport," Rust says. "You get more together."
Rust has experience in other sports as well. After playing basketball in junior high, she has shifted into an administrative role and currently manages the WCS Sr. Boys Eagles team. She also played soccer until she decided to commit full-time to playing Eagles volleyball.
In addition, Rust has played softball for a number of years as a pitcher and shortstop and has an MVP (Most Valuable Player) award to her credit. She won the provincial title in 1997 with the Blizzards and, before that, in 1995 with the Cutters - a personal highlight. "It was so awesome," she recalls. "It was so exciting for us."
Rust, who hopes to play softball in college next year, seeks inspiration from two special people.
"Personally, the people I look up to the most are my parents," she says.
