Lawyers talking as Nov. 10 deadline looms for Bellringer

As the deadline of Nov. 10 looms on the horizon for Bellringer Resources to make a payment to the City of Weyburn for the Plains Food Fibre Plant, a flurry of activity has been ongoing between the solicitors for the two parties.

"There been a lot of communication which has been taking place between our solicitor and the solicitor for Plains Food Fibre for about the last two weeks," said Mayor Don Schlosser on Tuesday.

"We're not dealing directly with Bellringer at all, we're doing it through the city solicitor (Stafford Nimegeers). That way we know things are being done properly and in the right way," he added.

Asked if the Calgary-based company will meet its deadline of Nov. 10 before the city's foreclosure action goes through, the mayor answered, "They keep telling us that they will, but we've heard that before. I hope it becomes a reality."

Once the deadline is passed, there will be a final process in the courts before the property completely reverts back to the city, added Mayor Schlosser, which could take until Nov. 24 to finish.

In the meantime, there have been communications with at least five groups interested in acquiring the former distillery plant in Weyburn's industrial park.

"That's just basic communications. We can't get into any heavy duty discussions, because there's no use in these companies wasting any of their time. Hopefully something will transpire. The thing is, if a program can't be worked out with the existing company, the sooner the city can get it back the better," said the mayor.

The Weyburn and District Chamber of Commerce took an official stand recently, telling city council that if Bellringer doesn't make its payment that the city should sell it to the highest bidder as soon as possible.

Bellringer has to make an initial payment of $1.2 million towards the purchase of the Plains Food Fibre plant, with an additional $400,000 to be mortgaged over a period of time. The company had proposed to manufacture ethanol at the plant for manufacturing purposes, with spinoff products such as animal feed.
