Sportrait: Marliss VerhaegheMarliss Verhaeghe has a thing for basketball.
"I've always been fascinated by it and watched it on TV," says Verhaeghe, 15, who is a fan of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls.
"I've always loved basketball my school didn't provide it because it was too small."
Verhaeghe hails from Crane Valley and only recently moved to Weyburn, where she is now attending classes at the Comprehensive School and has tried out for the Sr. Girls basketball team. For two weeks after she arrived, the Grade 10 student could be found practising in the gymnasium almost every day for an hour during her spare time.
Verhaeghe was first introduced to the game by one of her previous teachers, Mr. Davidson, back in Crane Valley when she was in elementary school. Since then, she has played intramural hoops and discovered an interest of other sports as well - including softball, volleyball, badminton and track and field.
Her brother is quite active as well and is involved in baseball and football, she adds. As for herself, Verhaeghe says she prefers team sports to individual activities. "That's why I don't like badminton that much," she says, offering an example. "You're just by yourself."
On a team, she says, everyone has a job to do and works together toward a common goal - something she enjoys whether it's basketball or not.
"I like playing anything," Verhaeghe says. "I like being active."
