Sportrait: Susan Beach

Basketball is Susan Beach's specialty.

Now in Grade 9, Beach is already in her third year of playing for the Weyburn Junior High Cobras basketball team.

"It's been fun," says the 14-year-old point guard. "I like the teammates and the coaches have always been fun."

Those coaches, she says, have included Mr. Johnson, Mr. Morrison and presently Mr. Guenther - all of whom have coached her at the junior high level. The experience has taught her the various intricacies of the game as well as how to be a team player.

Although she has also played on the Weyburn Junior High girls volleyball team for the past three years, she prefers hoops over other activities.

"It's more physical than some sports," Beach says. "I like volleyball, but I like basketball better you get to move around more."

Basketball is actually something of a family tradition: she is currently following in the footsteps of her sisters, all of whom have played the game. Beach got her own playing career off the ground when she was in Grade 4 and attended Weyburn's Heatwave Hoops summer basketball camp. She also began playing volleyball in elementary school.

Her goals for this season as a member of the Cobras are to play well and win some games - particularly in front of their home crowd.

"I'd like to win our home tournament," she says. "That would be nice."
