By KEVIN FOLK, Weyburn Review Sports Columnist
Sports prognostication is a common practice in the first week of a new year and I assume this year is no different.
Folklore is proud to present, for your convenience, this neatly formatted, handy-dandy Prediction Recorder for easy reference throughout the sports year 1999.
Those of you who would like to do this for more than amusement should fill in the blanks and sent it in to the address below. Whoever gets the most answers right will win a $100 gift certificate from the Weyburn Red Wings souvenir booth. My thanks to the Wings for the generous donation.
Let's see how farsighted you are. The entries must be in to the Review prior to the NFL Super Bowl. All questions are regarding the year 1999 or the 1998-99 season.
1. a) What position in the SJHL South standings will the Weyburn Red Wings hold at the end of the regular season schedule?
b) On what date will the Wings' season end?
c) Who will advance out of the SJHL South?
d) Who will win the SJHL championship?
2. Who will win the Super Bowl?
3. a) Who will win the Stanley Cup?
b) Who will the champion beat in the final?
c) Who will win the NHL's regular season scoring race?
4. a) Who will win the Grey Cup?
b) In what place in the Western Division standings will the Riders finish?
c) On what date will the Riders' season end?
5. Who will win Weyburn's Crocus Masters golf tournament?
6. In what place will the Saskatchewan Major Baseball League's Weyburn Beavers finish?
7. a) Who will win the World Series?
b) Who will hit the most major league homers?
c) How many homers will it take to win the home run derby?
8. Which rink will win the Scott Tournament of Hearts provincial title hosted in Weyburn?
9. How many hole-in-ones will be recorded at the Weyburn Golf Club this year?
10. What will be the weight of the heaviest fish (regardless of species) caught at Nickle Lake and reported to the Weyburn Review?
Note: this question is the tie-breaker. In the event of a tie for first place in this contest, whoever is closest to the fish's actual weight will win the $100 gift certificate. You may wish to answer in terms of pounds and ounces or even grams.
Whether you send it in or not, I hope you have a pleasant forecast.
