Tournament of Hearts

Heart Rock Cafe to offer live entertainment during Scott

Curlers and fans alike will have a chance to rock around the clock while they determine a provincial women's curling champion at the 1999 SaskPower Scott Tournament of Hearts this Jan. 27-31 in Weyburn.

The Heart Rock Cafe - the tournament's lounge which will be set up in the rink area of the Weyburn Curling Club - is a massive example of what can happen when you work hard to find a place to play hard.

"It's very massive," said Diane Mass, who is co-chairing the tournament lounge committee with Myrna Sanderson. "It's a lot of organizing and a lot of volunteers."

There are approximately 200 volunteers, in fact, who will work in four shifts of 16-18 people each day for five days at the lounge. Their duties include running the bar, selling tokens, serving tables if possible, selling a variety of souvenirs, providing security and cleaning up each night.

The Heart Rock Cafe's hours of operation will be from 4 p.m.-2 a.m. during the Scott's opening night on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 10 a.m.-2 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and it will reopen at noon on Sunday. There is no admission fee and people of all ages may attend although no one under 19 will be served.

Mass said they are hoping their year-long preparations and their '50s rock and roll theme will pay off come showtime.

"Hopefully we'll have good crowds," she said, adding they will host a volunteer night on Tuesday, Jan. 26. "We're getting down to the nitty gritty and it's all coming together very good."

Local talent such as Dusk 2 Dawn and Soo City Blue will provide on-stage entertainment during the lounge's four official nights of operation. In addition, closed-circuit TV monitors will allow guests to watch all the action going on next door on the ice in the Colosseum. The curling club's concession facilities will be open for business as well and a variety of door prizes will be awarded throughout the weekend.

Anyone interested in joining the volunteer corps for the event can contact either Diane Mass or Myrna Sanderson for information.
