Some competitors can play for a whole career without a perfect game - but not Weyburn's Margery Mazer.

"I've had a few of those," admits Mazer, referring to the perfect darts score of 180. "They're few and far between."

Mazer first became serious about the game 12 years ago. She is a member of the Weyburn Darts Club and the Weyburn Legion Darts Club and pays annual fees to the National Darts Federation of Canada. She plays regularly two or three times a week and participates in weekend tournaments.

"I try at it," Mazer says modestly.

She gave it a pretty good try last May when she won the National Singles Championship held in Weyburn, facing players from all across Canada.

"It was very exciting," she recalls. "It's something I had never thought I could do."

It wasn't easy. Mazer had to play off by section, tying for her section and eventually winning before having to play off again for first place overall.

It wasn't the first time she has competed at the national level, either. She was involved in the NDFC championship at St. Hyacinth near Montreal in June of last year, the second time she has been there. "The competition is outstanding," she says, adding that she has twice been to the Golden Harvest North American Cup in Saskatoon as well.

She has also competed at the provincial level in Weyburn, Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert and has travelled as far away as Edmonton, Winnipeg and Minot, North Dakota. One reason for it is that she loves the challenge of the game.

"The main part of it is to get the double," she explains. "The end of the game is a double-out."

The other reason? "The social part and the friends I've made over the years."
