Sportrait
A good sport.
That's how Lexine Giroux likes to describe herself. Picking her favourite sport, however, is a little more difficult.
"Oh, man. Can it be two?" she asks. "Volleyball and basketball. And water polo."
Those are just some of the many activities that keep this St. Dominic Savio School student busy. Giroux, 11, is also a speed swimmer with the Weyburn Silver Seals and plays soccer and tennis as well.
Currently she is a guard with the St. Dominic Angels girls basketball team.
"I love to play basketball," Giroux says, now in her second year on the roster. "I like just givin' 'er with the ball."
When she isn't doing layups or practising free throws, she can usually be found in the water. "I love water," adds Giroux, who enjoys racing with the Seals.
Giroux gets more out of sports than simply fitness, however.
"I like the energy of it and having fun."
Part of that is thanks to her coaches, particularly Mr. Fleck and Mr. Tremblay. She's learned a lot from them and had a good time doing it. "They're just cool kinda coaches," she says.
Giroux also used to play hockey, a sport her brother Brennen is still involved in. Overall, she has learned some valuable things from being an athlete - such as the benefits of not fouling too much or being too rough.
"To play the game fair and be a good sport about it" are the important things, she says.
