The next time you watch a PanCanadian Bantam Drillers game, watch for a familiar face on the ice.
"This is probably my fourth or fifth year," explains Megan Leach, a former member of the Blues, Angels and Flames female teams who now plays right defence for the Drillers.
"There was always ringette, but I like more physical sports, I'd have to say."
The 13-year-old consequently does a lot more than just play hockey. She is also involved with basketball, volleyball, water polo, baseball and speed swimming.
While living and travelling in New Zealand last year with her family, Leach also had the opportunity to play rugby and field hockey - and you don't get much more physical than rugby.
"I really enjoyed rugby. Both me and my sister played," Leach says. "It's like taking out all your emotions in one game. It's really challenging, physically challenging."
Part of the reason for that is the incredible toughness and stamina the game demands from its players. Their constant running is frequently interrupted by being tackled and knocked to the ground without the benefit of any protective equipment.
Leach wasn't intimidated, however. "I've always been a bit of a wrestler."
Sports has always been a part of her family and her parents have been an inspiration for her, she says. "I just love being active," Leach says, adding that she has benefited from good coaching over the years too.
"It's probably made me the person I am."
