Month of January sees extremes in weather

The month of January saw extreme differences between high and low temperatures, and a lot of precipitation in the Weyburn area, according to month-end weather statistics.

Although no records were set in January 1999, the coldest day fell to -37 degrees (on Jan. 14), and the warmest day climbed to 4.7 degrees (on Jan. 7). The average low was -20.1 degrees, while the average high reached -11.1 degrees.

This compares to the long-term mean maximum of -10.3 degrees, long-term mean minimum of -20.1 degrees, and an average of -15.4.

The total precipitation for January this year was above normal at 37 mm, compared to the long-term average of 23.6 mm.

The long-term average is taken from when Weyburn opened its weather station at the filtration plant in 1952.
