Laura Taylor may have lived in the big city all her life, but the new librarian for the Weyburn Public Library is enjoying her small-town experience.
Taylor, who replaced former librarian Murray Munn, moved to Weyburn with her husband in December. The Calgary native appreciates the atmosphere of her new home.
"I like the small community - it's easier to meet people, and people seem to be more friendly," she said.
A job ad on an Internet web site attracted Taylor here. She had recently completed an MA in Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta, and was working at a public library in Edmonton, when she saw the ad on the Foothill's Library Association web site. She was hoping to continue working in a public library atmosphere.
"I like the public library setting. I knew that's what I wanted to do when I finished school," she explained.
Taylor's impression of Weyburn's public library and its users is very favourable - she says people take advantage of the computers and wide range of books, and have been chatting with her so users get to know her and she gets to know them. She also had compliments for the staff.
"The staff is very helpful - they work hard. It makes my job a lot easier," she said.
Taylor's life-long love of books also makes her job easier. An avid collector, she enjoys reading authors like Margaret Atwood, Oscar Wilde, and D.H. Lawrence.
But books aren't her only hobby. Taylor's already been to a few Red Wings games, and said she liked it better than her NHL experiences, because of the energized atmosphere.
Taylor is hoping to usher in a few more programs in the library to attract new users. Although a large number of students are coming in to use the computers, she'd like to coax in more adults. She hopes to run a wills and estates seminar in March.
