The Weyburn Comprehensive School Boys' Basketball Tournament, held Feb. 19 and 20 at the Comp., had some of the best basketball being played all season by the eight teams at the tournament, said event organizer and Weyburn Eagles coach Wanda Pegg.
"The games were all very close, and that's what you're after. We had some of the best high school boys basketball teams in the province," said Pegg.
Winners of the tournament were the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones, who claimed the championship with a five-point victory over the Swift Current Colts.
The Eagles made it into the third-place final, but lost to the Brandon Neelin Spartans in a close game.
A crowd of about 100 came out to see the Weyburn senior basketball team battle it out to a final score of 67-72 for the Spartans.
Top scorers in the game were Jeremy Greening with 19 points, Devin Stein with 19 points, Chad Olson with 9 points, and D.J. Gall with 9 points.
Top rebounders included Devin Stein with 10 rebounds, Garrett Lee with 8 rebounds, and D.J. Gall with 5 rebounds.
The team had a total of 14 steals, a shooting percentage of 48 per cent, and a foul-shot percentage of 59 per cent.
Pegg was happy with the team's performance.
"The team looks like it's starting to gel - we had some excellent play by our point guard, D.J. Gault, who handled the press nicely, set the floor, maintained his composure, and rebounded hard, and some of out young rookies came off the bench, like Travis Bernard and Cole Labbee, who gave us some excellent minutes," she said.
