Tyrel Hansen knows how to keep his eye on the ball.

Hansen, 14, is a student at the Weyburn Junior High who is currently playing his second year as a forward on the boys basketball team.

"It's fun," he says of his hoops experience. "You get to meet friends and it's competitive."

Hansen likes the competitive atmosphere of team sports and is involved in a number of them. Besides shooting hoops on the basketball court, he plays baseball in the summer months as a pitcher and, he says, works pretty hard at it. His dedication paid off in a big way last year when he helped the Weyburn Bantam Legion Royals win the provincial A championship here in August.

It was the first time Weyburn had ever won Saskatchewan's Bantam A baseball crown, a title which was first established way back in 1954. In addition to that, Hansen accompanied the team to the national championship held in North Bay, Ont. where they represented the province against the best Bantam teams from across Canada.

"It was good baseball," he recalls. "They were tough teams."

Accordingly, he lists Major League Baseball's ace hurler Greg Maddux among his role models due to his work ethic. Hansen, who also plays volleyball for the WJH Cobras, brings competitiveness and a sense of humour to whatever roster he's on.

"Everybody gets down sometimes and you've got to cheer them up," he says.
