Student Speak

The Weyburn Review features the views of junior high students once a month in this space. This month we feature views from Weyburn Junior High and St. Michael Junior High. The question we asked this month was:

"Are you optimistic or pessimistic about what the new millennium will bring, and why?"

I am both optimistic and pessimistic. I think everyone is thrilled that we will be the humans that will be in the 21st century, but with this new beginning there are some happy as well as discouraging things that may happen. Technology is growing more and more advanced everyday There are some people who are building nuclear war weapons that could blow up our planet we also want to set a good example by being role models to people who look back to he starting of the 21st century.
- Tessa M. Brady, Gr. 7
Weyburn Jr. High

I am both optimistic and pessimistic. I am sort of influenced by rumours of the world ending and the computers going crazy. I am also optimistic because I think that the new millennium will bring more peace and loyalty towards others. I think people should start listening to others. I think that people should also help endangered animals and stop polluting the air. I also think that we should give the next people of our time some good stories to tell their grandchildren.
- Kristie-Anne Young, Gr. 7
Weyburn Jr. High

I am very optimistic about the new millennium because in the year 2000 I think that scientists will discover a lot more things and life on earth will be far more advanced. I don't know about living on the moon or flying cars, but I think there might be far more advanced computers and things like that. Scientists may even invent robots that will obey your command, but I will never know.
- Morgan Smith, Gr. 7
Weyburn Jr. High

I'm optimistic about the new millennium because space technology will have improved and they might find what's out there in the solar system. There will be new medical equipment to help battle diseases.
- Brad Wagner, Gr. 7
Weyburn Jr. High

I am very optimistic about the new millennium, because people are saying that in the new millennium there may be a cure for cancer. I know a boy who has cancer and will not live to see the year 2005 if he does not receive a cure. I hope that a cure is found and he gets to take advantage of it.
- Jessica Shelly, Gr. 7
Weyburn Jr. High

I am optimistic about the new millennium because I think it will be fun to live in the 21st century and I think that some time in the new millennium they will have cars that will hover above the ground so you won't need wheels. That's why I think it would be cool to live in the 21st century.
- Phoebe McFarlane, Gr. 7
Weyburn Jr. High

I am pessimistic about the new millennium. I'm always hearing things about computer breakdowns and disasters. Hopefully by the time the new millennium is here these problems will be resolved because I don't look forward to hearing about all the trouble that's been caused.
- Drina Leippy, Gr. 7
Weyburn Jr. High

I'm very optimistic about the millennium. I think it's going to be just like any other year. They're blowing the Y2K bug out of proportion and I think everything's going to be fine.
- Janell Ebel, Gr. 8
St. Michael Jr. High

I think that the millennium will be the same as any other year. I don't think it will be very exciting, but I also don't think the world will blow up or anything bad.
- Katherine Adams, Gr. 8
St. Michael Jr. High

I am pessimistic about the millennium. I heard that the world might explode and the power is going out, and that everything is going to go haywire.
- Devan Haider, Gr. 8
St. Michael Jr. High

In answer to your question, I think the world will become a different place where people will have a lot of advantages, just like the Jetsons, with flying cars, etc.
- Randi Biss, Gr. 8
St. Michael Jr. High

I think the new millennium will be no different than the other years. The year 2000 will be awesome to celebrate on New Year's, but I don't think it will change or be any different. Although I kind of wish it will be different, like flying cars or talking animals, etc. That would be so cool!
- Chantel Borys, Gr. 8
St. Michael Jr. High

I think going into the year 2000 and on will be great. There is so much in store for students and adults.
- Ashley Cameron, Gr. 8
St. Michael Jr. High

I feel very optimistic about the millennium because there will be more jobs created.
- Jeff Hingtgen, Gr. 8
St. Michael Jr. High
