Variety of issues to be covered at 1999 Farm Update

The 1999 Farm Update is gearing up for Thursday and Friday, March 4 and 5, at McKenna Hall, packed with speakers covering a broad range of agricultural issues.

Thursday's topics include a presentation on market specific crops, information from the provincial plant pathologist on Fusarium Head Blight and root rot diseases in wheat, a presentation on crop rotations, and insights on what to expect of a grain broker and how to use one in your marketing plan.

Crop destroying bugs aren't the only kind farmers need to worry about - Rob Schmeichel will be on hand to explain the pesky Year 2000 pest and what farmers need to watch for. And Ken Rosaasen, agricultural economist from the University of Saskatchewan, will highlight international events that could affect producer decisions.

The Southeast Regional Economic Development Authority plans to sponsor a session on agricultural opportunities. Presentations will include the potential of chickpeas, progress made by prairie pasta producers, and the potential for processing fruits and syrup from shelter belts.

Friday afternoon's session will be held by Gary Gregor, a sports psychologist who helped the Roughriders win the Grey Cup. His presentation will focus on developing a winning attitude to achieve your goal, which is applicable in all areas of life.

Gregor will also speak Friday evening at the Rural-Urban Night Banquet. The annual event, held in conjunction with the Farm Update, is an opportunity for rural and urban people to come together, and for the Weyburn Agricultural Society to thank their sponsors for the year.

Tickets are $15 per person for the banquet, which opens at 6 p.m., with supper being served at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Agriculture Society office or from any board member.
