Winners named for SCHD tobacco reduction art contest

Winners have been named in the Tobacco Reduction Creative Arts Contest for the South Central Health District, with the top three winners in each category to advance to the provincial level.

Donna Wolfe, coordinator of the contest for the health district, said there were many entries received from throughout the area for the contest, which was open to students in grades 6 to 12 in junior and senior divisions. The four categories of creative arts included art work, creating writing, audio-visual and web-page design.

In the junior division, the winners of the art work category were, in first place, Sienna Larsen, a Grade 8 student, Radville; second place, Jon Struthers, Grade 9, Ogema; third place, Victoria Fradette, Grade 8, Radville; and honourable mention went to Krystal Hagen, Grade 9, Gladmar.

In the writing category, in first place, Courtney Kozak and Tracey Johnson, both in Grade 8 at Ogema; second place, Noah Brenner, Grade 9, Coronach; third place, Kimberly Fister, Grade 9, Coronach; and honourable mention went to Giselle Benoit, Grade 9, Coronach.

For creative writing, Geoff Stewart, Grade 11 at Weyburn Comp, won first, with second going to John Kurtz, Grade 11, Weyburn.

In the audio-visual category, first place went to Rob Hillstead and David Roman, Grade 11, Weyburn, and second place went to Lise Marcotte, Grade 11, Weyburn.

In web-page design, first place went to Travis Buck in Grade 11 at Weyburn.

Wolfe said 10 health districts across the province are taking part in the contest, and judging of the provincial entries will now take place with the winners to be announced by June 15.

The contest fit in well with the Grade 9 health curriculum, said Wolfe, as the course focuses on advertising by tobacco companies in targeting youth. For the senior division, the Weyburn Comprehensive has a media arts elective, and this contest provided an outlet for their projects on tobacco advertising.
