The Weyburn Golf Club will receive a major shot in the proverbial arm this season when the doors open on its new clubhouse early next month.
Rod Carroll, the club's new manager and resident golf pro, said the expanded facility is a provincial-class venue that will be a major asset when it becomes fully operational.
"The potential for revenue is huge," said Carroll, adding that the new clubhouse will allow the course to host major tournaments that were previously beyond its capability to do so.
"It's a very up-to-date facility, on par if not greater than any in Regina."
Carpeting and painting work is presently continuing on the interior of the building, which is situated adjacent to the old clubhouse. The doors should be open by April 10, Carroll said, and when totally finished it will offer a fully-stocked pro shop, a high-calibre restaurant with a complete menu - and a resort-like atmosphere.
"People can expect a very service-oriented place," he said.
Carroll, 30, moved to Weyburn in December and is bringing 23 years of playing experience to his new position. A native of Regina, he spent nine years at the Regina Golf Club - five of them as an assistant pro and four as an associate - and ran the junior program there as well. He also has 10 years of experience in club repair and will be offering similar services here.
Three different golf lesson structures will be introduced at the Weyburn club this season under Carroll's supervision: private lessons at $25 for 45 minutes, semi-private lessons for 2-4 people at $50 for one hour, and a group rate for 4-10 people of $50 per person for five hours of instruction.
A club-fitting service will also be available for $20 ($30 if club adjustments are necessary) and there will be ladies' clinics for women members as well.
Other additions to the club's services this year will be expansions in the men's and ladies' nights and, more importantly, a change in tee-off booking procedure that will allow members to book three days in advance compared to two days for non-members.
"We just needed to put some structure in it," Carroll said. "It gives an incentive to become a member of the Weyburn Golf Club."
Although the club's fees have increased slightly this year, rates have remained among the lowest in South Saskatchewan, beating out Swift Current, Regina, Moose Jaw and Estevan. A single 1999 membership, not including tax, is $475, while couples are $850 and families with two juniors are $950.
The university student rate will be $185, juniors are $125 and green fees will be $22 for adults.
Memberships will be available at the club's booth for the Farm, Home and Leisure Show in April, and any 1998 membership renewed before April 30 will be at last year's rates.
Carroll added that an information meeting for junior golfers will be scheduled for sometime this spring.
