Johner Brothers named Entertainer of the Decade

Midale band the Johner Brothers brought home a one-of-a-kind Saskatchewan Country Music Award designed to recognize their amazing success in the industry.

The Johner's were named Entertainer of the Decade at the awards ceremonies held over the weekend in Regina.

The band, made up of Ken and Brad Johner, Bart McKay, Kevin Churko, and Shaun Beavis, was up for awards in nine different categories. However, in order to give some of the newer acts recognition, the band was given the award for their decade of success, and no others.

"We just stepped out of the way, basically," said Ken Johner. "It's an honour receiving an award from all our peers, especially when they made the award for us."

In the past, the band has captured 36 SCMA awards, including entertainer, group, single, song, video, manager, and record producer of the year.

Weyburn band the Yahoos, who were nominated for five awards, were recognized with band member Grant Honig's award for Steel Guitar Player of the Year.

It was Honig's first award for his guitar-playing ability, although he has been nominated in the category four times, and has played the instrument for 20 years.

"I didn't believe it at first - it took a little while to sink in, and it feels really good. I'm pretty proud," said Honig.

An amusing coincidence was that the award was sponsored by the Weyburn Co-op.

"I guess I'm keeping it in the community," he said.

Local band Wayne Honig and the Soo City Blue earned four SCMA nominations, but didn't take home any awards this year.
