Student Speak

The Weyburn Review features the views of junior high students once a month in this space. This month we feature views from Weyburn Junior High. The question we asked this month was:

"What is the most important issue facing youth today, and why is it important?"

I think that the most important issue facing teens would be drugs and alcohol, as every teen has been either pressured or tried alcohol or drugs. Another issue facing teens is peer pressure, as every teen has been pressured to do something they do not want to do, such as smoking. Peer pressure is always there and we cannot control it except to be strong. For example, if your friend asks you to come to a party and says there will be alcohol there and you say no, they think right away that you are a loser, but you are only standing up for what's right and alcohol is not right. I do not think that this is fair because it's what you believe in, and it's your life!

The most important issue in today's society to teens is the future. Almost everyone is wondering about the new millennium, if the world is going out of control, or if we're going to kill the ozone layer and make all of the animals and plants become extinct, or if our parents are going to get mad about our report cards. We all think about the future one way or another, so that's why it's such an important issue to us.

I think that drugs and alcohol are the biggest concern and issue facing teens today. I think this because everyday I see how teenagers hiding in bushes drinking or smoking. I also think this because once a few people in a group start doing drugs they tend to want their friends to start as well. If teens didn't get pressured in the first place, the tobacco industries would go under. So I say everybody at least has to try to quit smoking.

I think the biggest problem concerning teenagers today is getting along with their parents. Parents accuse you of stuff and they are over-protective. Teens want to have more space and less restrictions. Teens want to be out with their friends, not spent 'quality time' with their parents. Parents are still too worried about their kids. They have to realize we aren't two-year-olds anymore.

I feel that the most important issue facing teens today is racism. Many people are very racist around their peer group. I think lots of people probably aren't racist around their friends. This issue is very important to teens because there are probably more racist teens than anyone else and also a lot that are trying to get rid of it.
