Carly Pateman likes a lot of things about playing sports.
For one thing, she enjoys staying in shape, socializing with her friends and meeting new people. She also liked the responsibility of being a catcher last year with her baseball team, the Weyburn Blizzards.
"The whole game is centred around you," says Pateman, a Grade 10 student at the Weyburn Comprehensive School. "You have to have your head in the game all the time."
A six-year ball veteran, the 15-year-old Pateman was introduced to the game by her dad when she was younger. Since then she helped the Blizzards finish second in Saskatchewan last season and was part of the Weyburn Cutters team that won the provincial B girls title two years ago. "It was a pretty good feeling," she recalls.
There are other sports that hold her interest, however, such as basketball and badminton. She spent two years playing badminton extensively at St. Michael's School under coach Mark Stockham.
"It was pretty fun. We played a lot of badminton and we got a lot of games in."
Pateman put that experience to good use in her first tournament as a member of the Comp team this March in Oungre, winning the girls' doubles category with partner Frankie Dufour.
Pateman gives credit to coaches like Don Dufour for helping her develop.
"He's coached me for a lot of years and helped me improve, and probably Denis Tremblay he always makes you feel like you're a really big asset to the team."
