The Young Fellows Club's 42nd annual TV Auction is shaping up with a sizable inventory of 450 donated items ready to go on the block, said auction chairman Duane Walkeden.
The club held its final collection night on Monday, with the 450 items totalling a retail value around $30,000, "which is pretty well right on with past years," said Walkeden on Tuesday morning.
The annual fund-raiser sale will be held on Saturday, April 17, in McKenna Hall from 1 to 9 p.m., broadcast live on Channel 5, the community channel. Plans for the auction are mostly all in place, including arrangements to have Cable Regina bring in their remote broadcast truck for the show.
Young Fellows members will be manning the cameras, telephones and bid boards as they have in the past, with a crew on hand from Cable Regina for the technical aspects of the broadcast, said Walkeden.
This fund-raiser is one of the Young Fellows' biggest annual efforts to support their many ongoing projects in the community. The sale raised around $22,000 last year. Walkeden paid tribute to the 300 to 350 businesses who donated items in order to make the auction possible this year.
"This would not be possible without the generosity of area businesses. Even with the economy the way it is, our total is right up to last year, which was a boom year. We also have some new businesses who have contributed this year," he said.
Some of the items going on the auction block, for bid in person or by phone, include a fish finder, fishing pole, battery charger, new car tires, microwave oven, 19-inch colour TV, lots of fire wood and several certificates for everything from restaurant meals to construction labour and materials. One significant new item this year is an original painting by Ken Lonechild.
Some of the items are on display for viewing at the Weyburn Credit Union and Miles Agencies, and a full four-page listing of everything up for sale will be included in the Booster to be delivered this weekend.
