Sportrait

Wyatt Woycik graduated from the Weyburn Comprehensive School in 1995 - but he's not finished there yet.

Woycik, 22, is currently in his third year as a coach with the Comp track and field team, working with the sprinters alongside co-coach Chris Payak. It's Woycik's way of returning the favour and passing on the knowledge he's gained during his very active life.

"I just played so many sports during the years and I thought I should give something back to the program," he explains.

While a student, Woycik spent three years on the track team as a sprinter. He was also a member of the Eagles boys basketball team and played a variety of positions, primarily quarterback, on the football team as well.

This fall will be Woycik's fifth season of coaching minor football in Weyburn. The speed and power of football make it his preferred sport, and Woycik spent time last summer playing touch football in Regina.

He was also busy playing basketball in Weyburn's month-long July Hoops League, a fast-paced rec program organized by Kevin Folk.

"It's good competition," Woycik says, "and it gives you a chance to get out and run around."

When he was younger, Woycik swam with the Silver Seals and played hockey until he was in Grade 11. He's showing no signs of slowing down.

"It's a healthy lifestyle and you get to meet a lot of people," he says, adding that it has taught him commitment and self-discipline. "It's not only the sporting aspect, it's a life aspect too."
