Shelley Mactaggart has jumped into coaching with both feet.
Mactaggart, who worked as a lifeguard in Weyburn for four years, couldn't resist joining the hugely popular Weyburn Water Polo Club this season as a coach for young players in the Atom and Bantam divisions.
"I used to teach swimming lessons and just helping out with the kids is a lot of fun," she says.
Her enjoyment and interest in working with kids at the Weyburn Leisure Centre was so strong that Mactaggart joined the club this year despite the fact that she never played water polo herself. "They didn't have water polo even when I was teaching there," she adds.
She wound up taking a weekend coaching clinic offered by Sask Water Polo back in October with Denis Pilon, Jason Stewart and Shantel Kohonick, who are now her fellow coaches. Although new to the sport, she has discovered she thoroughly enjoys being involved.
"Yeah, I do. It's a lot of fun," says Mactaggart.
"It's really a team game. There's not one kid who can be a hero, and the kids are so eager. They're still at the age where they're excited about everything, which is nice."
Mactaggart also enjoys outdoor activities such as fishing, camping and especially golfing, and is looking forward to beginning her third year on the course this summer.
"It's good frustration relief - you get to whack that stupid ball," she laughs.
