Three local artists had their works chosen to go to a provincial adjudication competition from the Weyburn Local Adjudication on Friday, which saw the highest-ever number of artists enter.
The winning artists are Rosemary Ponto, who advances with a set of clay sculptures; Millie Coghill, who had a series of watercolour paintings; and Connie Waterman, who entered a set of acrylic paintings.
Critiques with artists was held by the two adjudicators all day Friday at the Signal Hill Arts Centre, where works from 38 artists filled the second and third floor galleries, including wood carvings, stained glass, drawings, paintings and photographs. The announcement of the adjudication winners was made at a public reception on Friday evening by adjudicators Zach and Iris Hauser of Saskatoon.
The three winners will now advance to the provincial adjudication to be held this fall in North Battleford. The works chosen at the provincial adjudication will be part of a two-year touring exhibition organized by the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC).
The artists whose group of works received an honourable mention include Margaret Hauglum, Sonia Fogel, Wendy Forsberg, Isobel Stewart, Corinne Trebick, Chris Blondeau Perry, Murray Pawlak, Mary Keeler and Ken Hill.
A number of individual pieces of art work were also singled out for honourable mention; these include works by Dorothy Howse, Margaret Zelionka, Doris Anderson, Dorothy McPherson, Mary Keedwell, Martin Scholp, Marnie Bernard, Nathan Bernard and Art Beck.
Adjudicator Iris Hauser noted there were some very nice works on display which weren't submitted for the competition, and offered some comments about what she and her husband were looking for while judging.
"These works are going into a touring show, so you're looking for a certain level of maturity as an artist. It isn't something you can rush into; you have to take the time to develop a clear-cut style. There are some groups here where one or two pieces are just fantastic, but the third piece just doesn't come up to the same consistent level," she said, adding praise for the high level of artistic instruction available in this community.
Her husband, Zach, added that they based their choices on their particular point of view, which doesn't mean the works are not worthy of honour.
