Councillor Debra Button said in council chambers on Monday night that the clean-up committee is in high gear working toward a June 1 judging date.
The clean-up committee held their last meeting on Thursday, April 29. But in council chambers Councillor Button again stressed the theme for this year is the back alley and she adds a clean back alley is the key to a win in 1999.
"We are in high gear and if it ever quits snowing we hope people will go out and check their back yards," said Button.
In an earlier interview Button said the heavy-duty pick up in the back alleys is a no-go, at least for 1999.
The clean-up committee in Weyburn works on a volunteer basis, said Button. The two free weekends for the delivery of garbage to the landfill cost just as much if not more than the heavy-duty pick up in the back lanes.
Button announced the first free drop-off to the landfill was a success and she thanked everyone for being conscientious and tarping their loads of refuse.
Button added the next free weekend for the landfill is coming up on May 15-16.
The area chairman have been selected for this year's competition and they include Ray Loos, Jack O'Dell, Ruth Pierce, Mel Vandesype and Dave Kerr.
Weyburn Minor Ball and volunteers from throughout the community will participate in another Green Day where loose refuse will be picked up. May 29 is this year's date for the Green Day.
Button says that she and Councillor Pickering and Mayor Don Schlosser are already signed up for Minor Ball Green Day on May 29. More volunteers are needed, however, and anyone wanting to help out in avenging the loss of the Golden Garbage Can last year can contact Weyburn Minor Ball or Councillor Button.
