It might be a little hard to keep track of Shanna Pilon during a water polo game.

That's because she is often playing in every position on her team.

"I like forward, but the guys always take that position," laments Pilon, 13, who is in her fourth year of playing with the Weyburn Water Polo Club. Although technically a Bantam player, she also plays in the older Cadet division.

"I like the challenge. I don't like going the easy way."

She is also rejoining the Silver Seals speed swimming team this summer for a sixth year to compete in a number of events: the 50-m free, 200-m free, 100-m breast, 200-m IM and the 100-m butterfly.

Pilon describes water polo as a good way to keep in shape between seasons with the Silver Seals. As a result, she is a skilled swimmer, a quality that comes in handy in the highly competitive and physical sport of water polo.

"You can pretty much beat up a guy who's twice your size if he's a weak swimmer," she says with a smile.

Although she enjoys playing a little pickup basketball now and then, Pilon confesses that she's "a pool girl" and would even like to try her hand at coaching, perhaps as soon as next year. She enjoys being coached in water polo by Jason Stewart and has learned some important things about teamwork while attending meets with the Seals.

"You don't mind if you lose as long as somebody else from your club wins," she says.
