The Weyburn Comprehensive band and choral left early Tuesday afternoon for their long-awaited trip to Toronto for the national music festival.
The band will perform in the competition at York University on Friday, and the jazz band and choir will put on a concert on Thursday. All members will attend a jazz concert on Saturday evening, or a concert by Shirley Eikhard.
On the fun side, students and chaperones will also take in a Blue Jays game, the Hockey Hall of Fame, the CN Tower and Canada's Wonderland. The buses will arrive back in Weyburn on Monday evening.
The final dance of the year was held on Friday with a very good attendance. A career panel on running your own business was held today, May 19.
An informative and emotional and hitting seminar was conducted for the Grade 12 class on Thursday. A video was shown and a number of speakers related personal experiences on the effects of drinking and driving.
The video showed the results of drinking on the liver and brain, then simulated driving while under the influence, a possible tragic result and what takes place immediately after. An addictions counsellor talked about his growing up years, followed by a personal story from a father who lost a son. Police Chief Bill Millar also talked about the prevalence of drugs and alcohol in the city and area today.
Funding for the event was supplied through the South East Sask. Association of Culture, Recreation and Sport, the South Central Health District and Sask. Lotteries.
The golf team attended a tournament in Estevan and the track team went to a meet in Regina today as well. WCS will be hosting the Southeast District track meet on Wednesday, May 26. Athletes will be here to try and make the team that will go on to the SHSAA provincial track meet in Moose Jaw on June 4 and 5. Some of the events will be held in Carlyle on Tuesday, May 25, for the 3000 metre race and hurdles.
The deadline for scholarship applications is Wednesday, May 26.
