During a noon luncheon held at the Legion Hall on Thursday Councillor Debra Button said May 29 is the day set for volunteer clean up. The Golden Garbage Can judgement day is June 1.
Button said the Green Exchange held on May 7-8 was very successful having raised close to $475.
"What was not sold was sent to the Salvation Army and Art Africa we succeeded in doing what we set out to do which was to keep this material from flowing into the landfill," said Button.
Button also added their was some confusion about the term Green Exchange, and there are thoughts of changing the title of the event to the Green Exchange-Garage Sale. It was also expressed that two days was too long and that next year's Green Exchange-Garage Sale might be limited to one day.
Ed Engele, engineering assistant with the City of Weyburn, reported the May 1 and 2nd free drop off at the landfill saw 414 vehicles pass through the gates at the landfill, which was more than the last year's two weekends combined. During the May 15-16 weekend 218 vehicles went to the landfill bringing the total number of vehicles at the landfill during the free weekend drop offs at 632 for 1999.
The paint exchange will be held in October this year, said Button. The paint exchange has been moved from its original date because people do renovations throughout the summer and a lot of those containers were finding their way into the landfill last year, said Button. Accordingly this year the strategy is to schedule the paint exchange after the summer months.
Minor Ball Green Day, the day when volunteers band together to pick up refuse throughout the City, will be held on Saturday, May 29 starting out at 9 a.m. at the Colosseum. At noon a barbecue will be held at Jubilee Park after volunteers have finished their garbage picking rounds. Volunteers are still required to serve ice cream to the minor ballplayers picking garbage.Bonita Letnes is the Minor Ball representative for the Green Day clean up.
Gladys Perepeluk from the Canadian Mental Health Association was also at the meeting to let committee members know that mental health provides gardening services at competitive rates to the private sector.
Area chairpersons also discussed how to deal with yards that are not kept clean enough for the upcoming annual cleaner-city competition with Estevan. Engele has drafted letters of notice which the area chairs will be posting to houses which have clean-up work to do. The area chairs include Roy Loos, Jack O'Dell, Ruth Pierce, Mel Vandesype, Dave Kerr, and Adam Ortman.
"We're hoping 80 per cent will comply and for those that don't I'll have to go take a look and contact the owner," said Engele.
May 28 is the date when Weyburn will do an internal competition in the residential, commercial and industrial areas, and on June 1 judges will compare Weyburn to Estevan.
