The Weyburn Destroyers battled to a bronze medal in the Bantam (13-and-under) water polo provincials held at the Lawson Aquatic Centre in Regina on Saturday.
Four Weyburn teams - the Destroyers, the Flyers, the Dynamites and the Bombers - faced two teams from Regina and one from Estevan. With the top three teams advancing from two pools, the Bombers were defeated by the Estevan Sharks in the fifth-place game while the Destroyers defeated the Dynamites 4-3 in a close battle for the bronze.
The Cadet (16-and-under) provincial finals were held on Sunday in the same venue with the Weyburn Clippers and the Weyburn Wild Ones among the five participating teams.
The Clippers were unable to advance to the playoff round and the Wild Ones were also eliminated a close 8-6 decision to the Estevan Sharks.
Head coach Janice Bernard was impressed with the performances of the Weyburn teams, especially in deep-water facilities that taxed player endurance.
The Weyburn Water Polo Club will complete their season this week with regular league play at the Leisure Centre.
