Archery Club raising funds through lottery

With expanding interest in the sport and inadequate target facilities, the Soo Line Archery Club is holding a lottery to assist with meeting their club's needs.

"More people are getting interested in the sport, and we have both long and short-term ideas for our specific needs," said Bryan Fergason, president of the club.

Proceeds from the lottery, which has a prize of a $1,000 shopping spree at the winner's choice of one local merchant co-sponsoring the draw, is to help offset rental costs of the club's facilities. Fergason says the current range is only 20 yards and the ideal for three dimensional target shooting is 40 yards, so part of the money is being set aside for the group's long-term goal of eventually having their own building.

The club, originally organized in the 1970s, folded and then was brought back to life about 12 years ago. Since then it has been expanding both its membership and facilities. The club has a membership of 30 adults and 13 children, and boasts ownership of 50 different 3-D animals which are placed at various distances for target practice.

The thrill of shooting, hunting, and the fact people don't require a firearm license, is a big draw to this Olympic sport which has no age restrictions.

"There's a lot of guesswork involved. This is a sport people can play from age six to 106," said the 12-year archery veteran.

Information about the sport or the club can be obtained at the indoor range located at 217 Souris Avenue. And tickets for the lottery will be on sale from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 29 at Weyburn Square.
