Season begins

Beavers beat Melville at home

The Weyburn Senior Beavers cashed in a major win against the Melville Millionaires Monday night, banking a rich 15 runs to Melville's pocket change of five.

A crowd of about 75 people braved the cold and wind to watch the Beavers win their home opener handily. It was a complete turn around from their season-opening defeat the night before when they lost 13-3 to Moose Jaw.

Monday night was a different story. Beavers pitcher Glenn Hoffman started the team off strong holding the Millionaires scoreless in the first four innings of play.

The Beavers, on the other hand, started producing runs right of the top, as runner Chad Topp capitalized on a wild pitch in the first inning to slide into home base.

The second inning remained scoreless as both teams went three up three down. In the third, Dustin Emberley's bat brought Murray Schultz home for a score of 2-0.

Although the bats started to heat up for Weyburn and Melville in the fourth inning, neither team was able to capitalize. Chad Topp came in to pitch for Weyburn in the fifth inning. The Beavers scored no runs on no hits with one runner left on base in the bottom of the fifth.

The batting action picked up for both teams in the sixth inning. A pinch hitter scored an RBI for Melville on a single, and came home himself on a single through the left side to tie the score at 2-2. But in the bottom of the sixth the momentum changed in favour of the Beavers. With the bases loaded, centre fielder Murray Schultz blasted a double into left field to bring home three runs while on the same play Melville comitted an error and the first-base runner, Mike Gamble stole home. When the dust settled the score was 5-2.

In the seventh inning, Mike Gamble came in to pitch for Topp, whose hand was injured on a wild pitch in the previous inning. Melville brought in one run in the top of the inning, but Weyburn answered back with when Mike Gamble stole home again on a wild pitch. The Beavers went on to score four more runs on no hits, with one Melville error and one man left on base, for a score of 10-3.

Melville scored two runs off four hits in the top of the eighth, but their pitching game fell apart in the bottom of the inning and Weyburn took advantage of it, bringing in five runs on four hits and one Melville error.

Weyburn held off Melville to no hits in the top of the ninth, to end the game with a score of 15-5. Despite the fact that Weyburn didn't bat in the bottom of the ninth, the game lasted a grueling three-and-a-half hours.
