11th Cancer Jam to feature 16 bands, rodeo, show'n'shine

Plans are coming together for the 11th annual Country Music Jamboree, a fund-raiser for the Southeast Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society to be held at Nickle Lake Regional Park, featuring 16 bands from around the province.

The Cancer Jam has been set for Saturday, June 26, and Sunday, June 27, and will feature many activities besides the continuous round of bands on the stage, including a motorcycle rodeo, hay rides, miniature golf, Cops for Cancer shave, dunk tank, a show-and-shine event and a beverage gardens.

The event will go from 1 to 11 p.m. on the Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Admission to the park is the usual gate price of $6, plus $2 per person over the age of 12 charged by the Jamboree committee.

The bands lined up to entertain so far include Another Wave, Rattlesnake, Ken Hill and the Hayseeds, Soo City Blue, The Travellers, Prairie Travellers, Laydee & Co., Moody Hollow, The Entertainers, Lorri Solomon, Eddie and the Crewcuts, Lightning Creek, Nighthawk, Cowlix, Jennie Ference and Wolf Creek with Julli Erikssen.

On the Saturday evening portion of the jamboree, all musicians have been invited to take part in a jam session.

Rides out to Nickle Lake park will be provided, starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday from the Best Value parking lot, with the cost being the $2 jamboree admission for those 12 and up.

A Show and Shine event will start with registration at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Dairy Queen parking lot, following by a town cruise before heading out to Nickle Lake. The show and shine will take place on Sunday at the lake from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with winners announced between 4 and 4:30 p.m.

A pancake breakfast has been planned for Sunday morning from 8 to 11 a.m. The police officers taking part in the fund-raising Cops for Cancer will have their heads shaved on Sunday between 2 and 3 p.m., plus there will be a dunk tank on site, along with hats and t-shirts for sale.

There will also be children's games held on Sunday afternoon at the park, from 2 to 4 p.m., put on by the Pathfinders and Cadets.

Camping will be available at Nickle Lake, but the park is usually filled to capacity well before the weekend, say jamboree organizers. The proceeds raised by the weekend event will be used for cancer research projects in Saskatchewan and Canada, for public education materials and to provide support for patient service programs.
