A possible tax revolt will be discussed and voted on by ratepayers
in the RM of Benson at a meeting set for Monday, Aug. 2, to be
held in the Benson Hall at 7 p.m. The meeting was called after a group of farmers presented
a petition to the RM, requiring them to call the meeting. The group says the purpose of the revolt is twofold - to get
a fair property tax assessment on farm land and to make the point
that voter approval should be required for tax hikes. Farmer Parry Phillips, who signed the petition, says since
the RM under law is required to collect property tax - 63 per
cent of which goes toward education - they became the target. "At the beginning of the year the (school division) tells
the RM what they want and they get it. I don't believe that's
right. We're against the way education is taxed," Phillips
said. "I'd hate to see the RM office close, but we have to
start somewhere," he added. If a majority of ratepayers vote to withhold their taxes,
the RM will be forced to close its doors. Phillips says the timing of the meeting is related to low
commodity prices and flooded land which have put farmers in a
poor financial situation. Petitions for similar tax revolt meetings have been circulating around the RMs of Francis, Montmartre, Wellington, Brokenshell and Scott. |
