Plans are falling place for the Weyburn Performing Arts Centre
Society's Celtic Weekend fund-raiser, as they have now confirmed
the booking of the Barra MacNeils for their Thanksgiving supper
on Sunday, Oct. 10, in the Weyburn Comprehensive's Cafetorium. The society has also now been registered as a non-profit organization,
a major step towards obtaining charitable society status, said
society member Marg Stewart. Other local performers are also being lined up for the event,
which society members hope will be large enough to be counted
as the world's largest fowl supper with the Guinness Book of
World Records. The Celtic Weekend will be supplemented with a performance
by John Gracie on Monday, Oct. 11, as part of the Weyburn Concert
Series. The series organizers have said the proceeds from this
concert will also be going towards the performing arts centre
society. The society will be meeting weekly from now until October,
said Stewart, as many details remain to be hammered out to put
the event together, including the need for volunteers. "As it's such a big project, we're going to be needing
people to help in all areas, before and during the event,"
said Stewart. Those wanting to help out can contact her, chairman
Dave Craigen or Linda Aitken. The performing arts centre society has also come up with a
new logo, designed by Jeff Molder. The logo is abstract art using
Labanotation, and will be used on letterheads, business cards,
posters and other promotional materials. The society asked Molder to come up with a logo that would
incorporate both the arts and education. Labanotation was used
as it is a notation system developed by Rudolf Laban for the
purpose of instruction in dance choreography. Molder, along with business partner Bob Satre, is now working
on developing a sketch and model of what the performing arts
centre will possibly look like, and this will also be used in
promoting the centre and raising public awareness about the project. The society is hoping to build the centre as part of the renovations at the Weyburn Comprehensive School, being carried out to incorporate the Southeast Regional College's Weyburn campus. The society was planning to use funding towards a new band and choral area as seed money for the centre, with the society to raise funds from the community and through corporate sponsorship for the balance. |
