More details of the fund-raising Thanksgiving turkey supper
and concert for the Weyburn Performing Arts Society are falling
into place, including the possibility the event may gain an entry
with the Guinness Book of World Records in its own category. The society members are meeting weekly from now until the
event is held on Sunday, Oct. 10, said president Dave Craigen.
The entertainment portion of the event will feature the popular
Celtic group from the Maritimes, the Barra MacNeils, with confirmation
coming on an opening act, Squeeze of Scotch, based in Regina. The idea for this event began initially with society member
Joanne Bannatyne-Cugnet, who made some calls and arranged to
book the Barra MacNeils as well as line up corporate sponsorship
to help underwrite their visit here. Since that time, CBC Radio has also come on board to help
promote the event, and talks are underway to have radio personality
Sheila Coles on hand as the emcee, along with a television personality. The group has received word from the Guinness record people
that they may set up a new category for largest sit-down meal,
said Craigen. The record for the largest meal ever served was
the only other category possible, and it was set in Texas at
a barbecue where 22,000 people were served. The target for the Weyburn group is 2,500 people to come in
five sittings, starting at 4 p.m. and running until 7 p.m. with
the Barra MacNeils to perform for two 45-minute sets, along with
the opening act if they are confirmed. An invitation for the festivities has gone out to Sheila Copps,
the federal minister of culture, said Craigen, as society members
hope to open doors for dialogue with related organizations in
Ottawa through her department. Service clubs have been coming forward to offer their services
as well, said Craigen, with the Rotary Club taking on the responsibility
to sell tickets and promote the event through posters and advertising.
The tickets will go on sale this week, with the first sale at
the mall on Thursday evening, with a table to be set up with
information. Ticket prices have been set at $12 for adults and
$6 for children. Three other service clubs have informally talked about ways
they can help, and these will be confirmed once meetings resume
in September after the summer break. Besides the volunteers which will come through the service
organizations, Craigen said the society is looking for volunteers
from the community to step forward as well, to help with everything
from setting up and taking tables, selling T-shirts and carving
up turkeys. A web site on the Internet will open in the next few days as well, through the assistance of the Southeast Regional Library. |
