Over $55,000 in awards and scholarships, along with academic
awards, were given out to graduated students from the Weyburn
Comprehensive School at their annual awards night on Wednesday. The top academic winner of the evening was Leann MacInnis,
who was awarded the Governor General's Award and the Andy Tuttle
Scholarship for $500, for having the top average of 97 per cent
on the year. She also was awarded the Weyburn Credit Union's R.S. Williamson
Scholarship for $1,000, the Weyburn and District Lions Club scholarship
award of $1,000, a Sask. General Proficiency Award for $500,
the PanCanadian Petroleum Excellence in Science Award of $1,000,
the Wascana Energy scholarship worth $1,000 (renewable for four
years), the T.C. Douglas Academic Medal, the Science level 30
subject medal, as well as placing as a runner-up for the music
subject medal and the mathematics subject medal. She had been
offered a $2,000 entrance scholarship to the University of Alberta
but turned it down. She also received a certificate of participation
on the Grade 12 team in last year's math contest. The male winner of the T.C. Douglas Academic Medal was Mark
Bauche, who was also the class valedictorian for the Class of
'99. He won the social studies subject medal for Grade 12, was
the runner-up for the English subject medal, and was awarded
the Catholic Women's League Bursary of $200, the El Rancho Bursary
of $2,000, a Sask. Proficiency Award of $500, the Valedictorian
Award and the Knights of Columbus Scholarship for $1,000. Jessi Wilson also took home a number of scholarship and academic
awards, including the University of Regina Scholarship for her
tuition, renewable for four years, a Sask. General Proficiency
Award of $500, the Williams/Wilson Scholarship for $400, a Weyburn
Rotary Club Scholarship for $1,500, the Weyburn Fire Brigade
bursary for $500, the PanCanadian Petroleum's Student of the
Year Award for $1,000, and the Dr. Paul Crosson Scholarship for
$300. Her academic awards included the mathematics subject medal
for Grade 12, runner-up for the science and social studies subject
medals, and runner-up for the T.C. Douglas Academic Medal. The first-ever Dawn Beach Memorial Scholarship, worth $1,500,
was awarded to Jennifer Bresciani as the winner of the R.C. Smith
General Proficiency award. She also won a Sask. General Proficiency
Award of $500. Other scholarship winners are as follows: Mary Fish won the
Masonic Lodge Latonia bursary for $250, a Royal Canadian Legion
scholarship for $500 in her first year and $300 for each of the
next three years (along with Allison Adderley), and the Weyburn
Teachers' Association Scholarship for $500; Andrea Sargent won
a Weyburn Rotary Club Scholarship for $1,500, the University
of Alberta Entrance Scholarship for $2,000, a Sask. Proficiency
Award for $500, and a Weyburn Co-op Association Scholarship for
$500; her academic awards included the University Women's Club
French Award, the French level 30 subject medal, and runner-up
for the business education subject medal. The Beta Sigma Phi Xi Xi bursary was awarded to Chemaine Lai.
The second Catholic Women's League bursary for $200 went to Michelle
Girardin. The Country Women's Association scholarship went to
Jared Nelson and Brian Woodard. The Elks Lodge bursary was awarded
to Amber Stehr, who also won a Weyburn Chamber of Commerce scholarship
for $300 and the Weyburn Young Fellows' Don Murray Memorial Bursary
for $250 per semester to a maximum of $1,000. The Family Place bursary for $250 went to Patricia Beach,
the Laura and George Hall Memorial Bursary for $1,000 was awarded
to Odette Dempsey, the Matthew Hall Memorial Bursary of $250
went to Sarah Quickfall, and the McCoy-Pharmasave Bursary was
given to Tessa Kerowatski, who also won the Order of the Royal
Purple Bursary for $250 and the business education subject medal. The Jim Rose Memorial Bursary was awarded to Stephanie Knibbs,
and the Legion's Ladies Auxiliary Jubilee Bursary for $500 went
to Allison Adderley. Kevin Moffat was the other winner of the
Chamber of Commerce scholarship, Becky Rowein won the scholarship
from the Weyburn chapter of the Sask. Registered Nurses' Association
worth $300, Sarah Kot won the Weyburn Community Bingo Bursary
for $500, and the second winner of the Co-op Association scholarship
was Lanette Ernst. The winner of the first-ever Coca-Cola bursary for $1,000
was Greg Olson, who also won the computer science subject medal.
The second winner of the Credit Union's R.S. Williamson scholarship
of $1,000 was Sheldon Reiss, the Weyburn Kinette Club bursary
for $250 was Leena Honig, and the Kinsmen Club Scholarship of
$500 went to Erin Grosjean, who also won a University of Regina
entrance scholarship for $1,000, a Sask. General Proficiency
Award of $500 and the English subject medal. The University of
Saskatchewan Platinum award of $2,500 went to Josh Giroux. The recipient of the Tom Zandee Humanitarian Award was Alison
Mehler, and the winners of the Canadian Mental Health essay contest
was Sharla Wilkinson and Jenn Lupanko. Other academic award winners were Jennifer Neiszner of the accounting subject medal, Amy Fradette of the art subject medal, Lyndsay Prochinsky of the cosmetology subject medal, Christine Halkyard of the home economics subject medal, Alex Roy of the music subject medal, Tyler Finch of the physical education subject medal, and Lyle Stomp of the tech/voc subject medal. |
