Comp starts year off with breakfast

Welcome Week at the Weyburn Comprehensive School is well underway with an assembly and the magazine sales kickoff already completed. School spirit seems high and the SRC is hopeful that all students will get out and try to sell magazine subscriptions.

The community support is necessary so that upwards of $7,500 can be raised to fund SRC-sponsored activities. The goal this year is to sell 1,000 subscriptions which is just a little above the 950 sold last year. The campaign will last two weeks and if there are any questions please contact Bob King.

On Thursday morning, Sept. 9, the public is invited out to a pancake breakfast starting at 8 a.m. in the Cafetorium. The breakfast is free for students and $1 for everyone else. Come out with your family to help launch the new school year.

Friday is Spirit Day and all students are asked to wear red, black and white. Friday will also see the first concert series program with a performance to be presented by Connie Kaldor at 8 p.m. in the Cafetorium.

The first home football game of the year is on Saturday, with the Eagles taking on Regina Riffel at 1 p.m. The team is an unknown quantity at this time of the year, with quite a few veterans but a fairly large number of rookies. Only time will tell how the team does this year. Both volleyball teams get their first taste of action this weekend with the boys in Lumsden and the girls in Oxbow.

The girls soccer team have their first game on Tuesday, Sept. 14, against Notre Dame, and members of the school golf team will be off to Estevan on Sept. 15 for a district competition. Winners at this event will be returning to Estevan on Sept. 24 and 25 for the SHSAA provincial golf championship. WCS's Graham DeLaet is the defending provincial champion.

Cross-country practices have started and Weyburn will be hosting the district finals in early October.

Next weekend, Sept. 17 and 18, sees the school dance on Friday and the boys' volleyball tournament on Friday and Saturday. There will also be a football game on Saturday against Regina Martin.
