Emberley attends national baseball camp

Landon Emberley experienced what many only dream about.

He attended a national baseball camp at Toronto's SkyDome with 34 other players.

The Adidas Junior Elite Baseball camp was held from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2 and had players from every province attending.

"At the start of camp, the pitchers worked on mechanics then took batting practice," said Emberley, a pitcher with several Weyburn-area baseball teams. "After that, we talked to the Toronto Blue Jay trainers about keeping our shoulders healthy."

The baseball camp was not all about training. Aside from daily workouts, players received life-skills training such as proper diets for athletes and making positive career choices."

Then the camp shifted venues to SkyDome.

"It's really nice there," said Emberley. "It's so big, when you get on the field, you feel you are the best. It's in such good shape."

Every evening, the players attended Blue Jay games as guests of the camp.

"I caught a baseball during one game," said Emberley. "The next day, I got it autographed by Shawn Green, Homer Bush, Blue Jay manager Jim Fregosi and Vernon Wells."

Later during the camp, Emberley got to sit in the Blue Jay dugout with Fregosi and talk baseball.

On the final day of camp, the 35 players split up into two teams for an intersquad game.

"I pitched two innings," said Emberley. "It was hard to get used to the mound because it is so high."

Emberley adjusted quickly enough, striking out three batters, hitting one and walking one. He gave up no hits.

The pitcher also took some cuts during his two trips to the plate.

"On the second pitch of my first at-bat, I hit the ball 390 feet off the wall," said Emberley. He wound up with a triple.

His second at-bat was not so much fun.

"I was hit by a pitch off my helmet," said Emberley. "The ball then hit my thumb. I could not move it for several days."

The injury caused Emberley to miss a tournament in Grand Forks B.C., which we was to leave for immediately upon his return from Toronto.

The Adidas Junior Elite Camp helped scout players for next year's junior national team.

"I hope to be going back to nationals next year," said Emberley.
