World's largest fowl supper

By RAY HAMM, Performing Arts Society

Fowl suppers are a grand old tradition in this part of the world and maybe only in this part of the world. They are an event that brings together family, friends and community to celebrate common bonds of prosperity and plenty. So it is fitting that a fowl supper be organized and held at Thanksgiving, another time to celebrate our quality of life. On Sunday Oct. 10, the Performing Arts Centre Society is hosting a fowl supper at the Weyburn Comprehensive School. It will be a fowl supper with a difference! It will be a Thanksgiving fowl supper to be remembered! It will be the World's Largest Fowl Supper, serving some 2,500 lucky guests who were quick enough to purchase tickets to the event while tickets were available. It will be a fowl supper featuring at least three hours of quality Canadian Celtic entertainment as Weyburn will be visited by The Barra MacNeil's from Cape Breton and A Squeeze of Scotch from Regina. Festivities begin at 4 p.m. and continue until at least 7:30 p.m. Five sittings are available and when guests are not enjoying the Thanksgiving feast, they can enjoy the music of the featured musical artists.

The fowl supper is notable too, because of the community involvement in its organization and its operation. Significant sponsorship has been generously provided by local and area businesses. All of the service clubs and several sorority and fraternities in the community are involved in some particular aspect of the event appropriate to the community service for which they have become known. The community's involvement is both crucial and commendable - crucial because without it, an event such as the fowl supper and the project that it supports (the construction of the Performing Arts Centre) could not happen; commendable because in that magnificent Weyburn tradition of community support for worthwhile ideas, the area residents have again shown that together, the extraordinary can be done.

What has all this got to do with you? First, plan to be one of the 2,500 people in attendance. Contact your family and arrange for this year's Thanksgiving meal to be the World's Largest Fowl Supper. Locate a member of the Weyburn Rotary Club and buy tickets for the appropriate sittings of 4 p.m., 4:45 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 6:15 p.m. or 7 p.m. Adult tickets sell for $12, children under 12 for $6. If you really cannot come, consider purchasing tickets to donate to someone who otherwise would not be able to attend. Contact a Rotarian for details on "gift tickets." On Oct. 10, come to the west entrance of the Comprehensive School, the gym entrance. Contact a local Kinsmen if you need a ride. Come early, if you have a later sitting or stay later if you have a later sitting and enjoy the music of the Barra MacNeils and Squeeze of Scotch. Feast on the food prepared Weyburn Young Fellows and The Knights of Columbus. Purchase a t-shirt or apron from the Weyburn Optimist booth. Complete a Celtic weekend by picking up tickets to Monday's performance by John Gracie sponsored by the Weyburn Concert Series. View the proposal for the Performing Arts Centre and participate in the other opportunities to support construction of our theatre. For a mere loonie, purchase a chance on seat number one in the new theatre. Above all, come and meet your new neighbours and friends and enjoy the food, music, company and conversation. ACT EARLY! Because the Performing Arts Centre Society needs to know how many turkeys to order, pre-sale of tickets is imperative. See you at the supper!
