Lantern festival will shine in Weyburn

The Weyburn Arts Council will hold a Lantern Festival on Friday, Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. beginning at the Weyburn Court House.

A short program will include musical selections by Michele Pilon, a ribbon dance by Colleen Weimer's music students and readings by the Weyburn Writers Guild. The program will conclude with a lantern procession to the Allie Griffin Art Gallery at 7:30 p.m.

In preparation for the event, lantern-making workshops will be held on Sept. 17 and 18 at the Signal Hill Arts Centre. These workshops are open to the public, with a small fee charged for materials. Adults and children may reserve their spots by calling the Signal Hill Arts Centre on Sept. 16.

The festival will be held in conjunction with an exhibition entitled, Children's Art From Twin Cities in Asia, on display at the Allie Griffin Art Gallery until Sept. 27. This exhibition of 44 works was created by Chinese and Japanese primary, middle and high school students who attend Asian Pacific schools which were twinned with schools in Saskatchewan during Canada's year of Asia Pacific in 1997.

One of the Saskatchewan participants was Weyburn's own Assiniboia Park Elementary School.

The exhibition is being circulated by the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils.
