The Red Wings ended the pre-season this weekend with a 6-2
record, leaving last year's performance out of sight and out
of mind. The Wings beat Notre Dame 4-1 on Wednesday night, helped by
Peter Hay's hat trick. Weyburn's second loss of the year came on Friday to Yorkton.
The Wings gave up a late goal which put the Terriers up 4-3.
The pre-season ended on Sunday with a 5-4 shootout win over
the Melville Millionaires. As the Wings prepare for their season opener on Friday, Sept.
17 in Yorkton, Red Wing coach Dwight McMillan is confident about
his team's chances for a good year. "I think our goaltending is strong," said McMillan.
"When our defense gets cut down to six, we will also be
strong there. David Lapierre, Peter Hay and Bryce Fossum will
really help us this year." Where the Wings wanted to improve was up front with the forwards. "You always want the ability to score goals," said
McMillan. "If you do, it puts pressure on the other team." For the Red Wings to maintain their success, the Wings have
to continue doing what they do well. "We play in a very competitive league," said McMillan.
"We have to work hard every night to be successful. I think
to this point, the players have worked hard. That's why we are
6-2 in the pre-season." The Red Wings drew a tough assignment to start their regular
season on the road against the Yorkton Terriers. Yorkton has 10 returning players from last year's team and
looks to perform well this year. "We have four really good lines this year," said
Yorkton Terrier coach and general manager Wade Klippenstein. There is one thing going in favour of the Red Wings: Yorkton
has had only one home opener in 14 years. "You are only as good as your last home opener, so we
are hot," said Klippenstein. Both teams want to start the year in front of the expected
1,500 fans in Yorkton with a win. "Road games to start the year are always hard,"
said McMillan. "You have their team and fans all fired up
and there are opening ceremonies. But we will give it a wing
and see what happens." Weyburn's season home opener at the Colosseum is on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. |
