Eagles Boys v'ball take silver at tourney

The Weyburn Comprehensive School hosted their annual boys volleyball tournament this weekend at their gymnasium.

The 12 team round-robin tournament started on Friday. Weyburn's 16-man team was divided into two squads for the tournament, with one team in each pool.

"It was a good idea," said coach Terry Biss. "My grade 10 and 11 players are good enough to play. So I let them play."

Weyburn 1, the Grade 12 team won their pool, Weyburn 2, a team with players with grades 11 and 10 finished fifth in their pool, losing many of their sets in six points or less.

Weyburn 1 qualified for the playoffs and played Regina's Miller High in the semi-finals, and beat them two sets to one.

They met Swift Current in the final, the team who beat them in the final at last week's tournament in Lumsden.

Despite a valiant effort in later stages of the match, Weyburn 1 was beat by Swift Current 25-10, 20-25, 15-10.

"I was very pleased with how the teams competed," said Biss. "We can improve, but I was really pleased with both groups."

Volleyball has switched to a new scoring system. Instead of the former five-game matches with sets running to 15, there are now three sets with the winner needing 25 points. Points are now scored on every serve, with the team gaining the serve at the end of the play being awarded the point.

"Kids are more conscious about their serve," said Biss of the differences. "Teams have to be there all the time. They can't play soft at any time."

For Biss, there are improvements to the game.

"There is more flow to games now that was not there before," said Biss.

Despite the positives, there are some problems with the new system.

"You can now lose a game with the serve," said Biss. "I don't like that. There should be some advantage to holding the serve."
